Essential oils have been used quite successfully in treating painful sinusitis. Certain oils and combinations of oils work to open nasal passages, reduce the swelling of nasal tissues, clear up congestion and reduce the pain. Some of the oils have an expectorant effect that helps to break up congestion and expel the mucus. Others are antiseptic and fight infection or stimulate the immune system.

They can provide purely symptomatic relief, but they are best used to prevent little problems from becoming bigger problems. If you have a nasty sinus infection or chronic problems, you will want to consult a medical professional.

The sinus cavities are part of the respiratory system and allow air to circulate via the nasal passages. When the sinuses become blocked due to a cold or sinus infection, the result can be intense pain and pressure behind the eyes. Smoking can also lead to chronic upper respiratory allergies and postnasal drip. Allergies, hay fever and dental infections can contribute to sinusitis.

My rub will relieve sinus headache, just a touch  above each eyebrow and on each cheek bone (the sinus points) can relieve a sinus headache within a matter of five to 10 minutes. The same treatment is also effective in immediately stopping sinus drainage, especially the type that starts as soon as your head touches the pillow, making you cough when you are trying to go to sleep.

Statistics reveal that Sinusitis is one of the leading forms of chronic disease in America, with an estimated 18 million cases and at least 30 million courses of antibiotics per year. About 40,000 people have sinus surgery every year. In Australia it is 10% of the population.

Lavender is gentle and soothing and calming. Lavender oil has many uses; it is a powerful antiseptic containing more than 200 compounds that are active against fungi, viruses and other microbes. Many of the purported medicinal uses for lavender have, upon modern scientific testing, proven to be legitimate. Lavender oil was used extensively on the battlefield during both World Wars when medical supplies became scarce to prevent infection and as a pain reliever.

Peppermint and Spearmint has anti-inflammatory properties. These properties can help soothe mucus membranes, while the menthol in peppermint oil acts as an expectorant providing temporary quick relief from nasal congestion and sinus pain.

Rosemary benefits the respiratory system it disinfects the sinus passages. It has strong antiviral properties and excellent for the immune system and excellent for treating colds and flu.

In a study in Machon (2001) they performed a controlled study using a mixture of Eucalyptus,Ravensara,Peppermint essential oils on sinus infections. The control group inhaled from a steam bath three times a day for ten minutes, while the experimental group inhaled the blend for the same amount of time. Charts measuring pain, wellness, colour of mucus, and amount of mucus showed that the mixture reduced discomfort and cleared the subjects’ mucus, while the control group remained the same.

Ravensara essential oil has strong anti-viral properties.  It  is prescribed in France and other countries by medical professionals for use in fighting viral hepatitis and viral enteritis. Ravensara is highly beneficial for respiratory infections, especially viral infections than bacterial infections. Whooping cough, sinusitis (sinus infections) and other bronchitis types of illnesses can be supported by using Ravensara in a room diffuser or steam inhalation. No house should be without this teatree essential oil, as it is one of the most powerful immune system stimulants and sorts out most viral, bacterial and fungal infections in a snap.

Geranium Essential Oil is soothing, antiseptic, antidepressant.  It is a cooling oil and calms the mind, relax the body and ease frustration and irritability when unwell.

Cedarwood essential oil is beneficial in controlling  respiratory infections. Cedarwood essential oil may be antiseptic, calming, and a diuretic. Cedarwood essential oil helps with bronchitis, fungal infections, arthritis, congestion, coughs, sinusitis. Cedarwood essential oil may stimulate lymph circulation, regulate nervous system and stimulate the immune system.

Ginger has been used as a medicine since very early times and is recorded in both Sanskrit and Chinese texts, ancient Greeks, Romans, and Arabians literature. It helps, chills, colds and ’flu catarrh, congestion, coughs, sinusitis.

Thymehas many uses as an antiseptic. It makes a good pulmonary disinfectant, which helps with all respiratory infections including coughs, colds, and sore throats.

Lemon Myrtle apart from being a wonderful mood lifter and calming, it's the most antiseptic, antiviral, antifungal of the Australian essential oils (more powerful than teatree) and is helpful with colds, flu's, chest congestions.

Oregano Oilcan be attributed to its properties like anti viral, anti bacterial, anti fungal and anti allergenic.
